Installing Windows XP SP2 on SATA Hard drives?
Hello there.... I have a windows xp SP2 already installed in my computer, but the problem is my PC has gotten too buggy! It has slowed down(it takes 10 minutes before it can load my desktop), my Internet Explorer always get crashed(freezes) and i recieve lots of error after start-up and before shutting down. I know its all my mistake beacuse I installed those damn free 'cool' screensavers on the net, love to use the ctrl+alt+del func even some programs are running or shutting the system down(a proper shut down) even i have some opened programs and forcefully ending them now. No viruses, adware or spyware found after running antiviruse programssss so i decided to 4mat 8 & reinstall XP. Now i am hving a problem in installing XP on my hard drive(Seagate Barracuda 120GB). I can't instal beacuse during installation, the setup cannot detect any hard drives. even during CMOS setup(where sreen turns blue), it shows no hardrives found. But wen I log-in in my buggy system, it runs. why is that? I unstalled those free screen savers before running the scanning. but no detections. This is annoys me. Anyway, for more info about my system: Procsessor - Intel 2800 Mhz Hard drive - Seagate Barracuda 120 GB RAM - 1024 MB Video Card - Tornado GeForce FX 5500; 256mb(128bit) Mother Board - Asus P4 V800D-X How can i install XP SP2? Any step-by-step intructions? I am also planning to attach a Seagate Barrcuda 160 GB hard disk as a slave and would like to partition it, will it be fine for my system? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ok.... tnx fluap for the details... i undertsand all of your instructions and explanations except one thing... What's a Mobo? Sorry, i am not a computer expert but i'll try to one.. by the way, i'll try yours...

- Older versions of the Windows XP installation CD do not come with SATA drivers, so Windows cannot see the drive to install to it. To fix this problem, you'll need to get your SATA controller driver on a floppy disk (primitive, I know), and during the beginning of the Windows XP installation "boot up," it'll ask you to press F6 (I believe it's F6) to configure any SATA, SCSI, or additional drives. Press F6, and select the driver you've downloaded to your floppy disk. After the drivers are loaded, continue the installation as normal. Hope this helps you. If you need additional help related to this problem, feel free to email me!
- First, i hope you've backed up everything you need before doing the install. Remember some important data files used by outlook or outlok express are in hidden files until you un-hide them. Next as to the "not seeing the drives" problem. I sounds like your motherboard may need 3rd party SATA drivers. Check with your original paperwork for the MoBo, and any driver disks it may have come with (probably a floppy). If you don't find the stuff you need there, go to the MoBo manufacturers website and check for downloads or support files. I have a gigabyte MoBo with the same scenario, yours may be similar. Remember when installing XP, keep an eye on the bottom info bar when it's first copying the files from the CD, it'll ask you if you need to install 3rd party SATA or RAID drivers, you'l need to press F6 (i think) to get it to prompt you later on. Then you need to keep the floppy disk in and select the right version of the file for it to use. Hopefully this is the problem, if not then it's back to the drawing board. Good luck!
