If whales and dolphins have an underwater language to communicate, then do my aquarium fish also?

It is well known that whales and dolphins communicate with each other by an audible sonar (noise) across great distances in the water. My question is, do my fish in my aquarium have this ability on a smaller scale yet not discovered by humans, or have they not this capacity. And if not, at what point down the fish family does this "communication" cease to exist? Your references would be very helpful, if there are any. Or just explain your logic. Thanks.

  1. this is a good question, that deserves a simple answer , try getting a stethoscope and listen once a day for a week at the same time then another week at a different time and log all your observations and audio notes you may be on to something.
  2. While it's impossible to say whether there's communication between fish that hasn't been discovered yet (after all, how would we know if it hasn't?) it's very likely that they do not have any kind of communication resembling that of Cetaceans (whales and dolphins). Cetaceans are mammals and not closely related to fish. They have much larger brain size in relation to their body mass, and what's more, they are known to produce a wide array of sounds whereas most fish are not known to be capable of doing so. There IS rudimentary communication (which may be limited to, say, visual cues and the like) within and between species, though, but it's rare to find any kind of communication (intraspecial or interspecial) on the level of complexity of cetaceans and primates. It would be particularly surprising to find animals with less advanced brains exhibiting something similar.
  3. I hear my Goldfish every Night cause I talk every Day to them. Otherwise only Mammals like Whales and Dolphin can make the sounds.
  4. yes if u ever whatch that program that ill be ur nabor with whats his face 'its a lovly day in the naborhood' he once on his show put an underwater mikeraphone in the tank and u can actully here the noises they make so the anser to ur Q IS YES.
  5. Whales and dolphins are mammals. Their intelligence level is a lot higher than your common aquarium fish. But your aquarium fish probably do communicate through simple body language but I doubt they communicate or even have thoughts or feelings. Communications is probably limited and related to their survival skills: eat, sleep, live.
